Connecting classroom lessons to real history: Students visit Rwanda’s historic Museums

Primary Six students from Ecole de l’Immaculée Conception Ngarama in Ngarama Sector, Gatsibo District, visited the King’s Palace Museum in Rukari, Nyanza and the Rwanda Museum in Huye.

During the educational trip, the students received detailed explanations about the history of the Rwandan Kingdom in Rukari, and also visited historical and cultural artifacts preserved in Huye.

After the trip, the students thanked the school administration for facilitating the visit, saying they learned many things that will help them in the upcoming National Examination.

Ikuzwe Sano Landry said: “In Rukari, we saw where the King lived and the royal cows, Inyambo. In Huye, we saw ancient tools. I now understand history lessons better, and it will help me pass the National Examination.”

Muberarugo Flavia added: “Seeing with our own eyes the things we studied helps us not to forget them. We thank the school administration and our parents who helped us go on this trip.”

Maniraguha Théoneste, the Headmaster of Ecole de l’Immaculée Conception Ngarama, said the trip is held annually. He stated: “The reason we do this is to help students prepare well for exams by connecting what they see in our heritage with what they learn in class, so they can pass well. Not only that, it also helps them love their country and know its history. We thank the parents who continue to support us, and the management of the Museums who welcomed our children warmly and explained everything to them. We believe that with discipline, the children will pass.”

The 130 students, including 58 boys and 72 girls preparing for the Primary Leaving National Examination, participated in this one-day educational trip to visit these two major museums in Rwanda. They were accompanied by their teachers and the Headmaster.
