Pope Leo XIV needs no further treatment after surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his right lung, the Vatican has said.
Doctors confirmed that the Pope had lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, but the disease was limited to one area. The Vatican said that “no further treatment is necessary.”
The 71-year-old Pope underwent a 90-minute operation on 13 October at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. Doctors removed the lower part of his right lung. He left the hospital four days later.
On Wednesday, he held his first weekly general audience since leaving hospital at St Peter’s Square.
The Pope had earlier announced that doctors had found a nodule in his lung. He said it had be en detected “at an early stage”.
The Pope is also expected to visit Latin America in early November, although his recovery could affect his travel plans.
