North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has showcased the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile at a newly opened military museum, highlighting the country’s growing weapons capabilities amid regional tensions and renewed speculation about talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim attended the museum’s opening ceremony on October 11 alongside his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and daughter, Ju Ae. Photographs showed a range of military equipment developed under Kim’s leadership, including drones, long-range missiles and mobile launch systems.
The Hwasong-20, first unveiled in 2025, is presented by North Korea as capable of reaching the United States mainland. Analysts suggest it may be designed to carry multiple warheads, although its full operational capabilities have not been independently confirmed.
Kim’s visit comes as Trump considers the possibility of meeting the North Korean leader during his planned November trip to China for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. However, no meeting has been officially confirmed.
Meanwhile, North Korea reported testing a tactical missile to assess the performance of an undisclosed component. South Korea’s military also reported multiple missile launches towards waters off the Korean Peninsula’s eastern coast, adding to concerns about the region’s security.
North Korea’s latest military display highlights rising regional tensions. The museum opened on October 11, 2026, and South Korea reported North Korea’s fourth missile launch in a month, with one missile travelling over 900 kilometres. However, the Hwasong-20’s full capabilities remain unverified, as speculation continues over possible talks between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump.
