On Friday afternoon, in Kiramuruzi Sector, Gatsibo District, the 32nd commemoration was held for Tutsi victims killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and thrown into Lake Muhazi.
The event was attended by leaders from various institutions, Genocide survivors, religious leaders, and youth.
Patricie Umunezero, who gave a talk on the history of the Genocide, said: “Commemoration plays a significant role in building the unity of Rwandans because we learn from history. Let us continue to build unity, and the unity of Rwandans is our strength. Let us build a Rwanda free of Genocide.”
In his testimony, Dismas Gasangwa, a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, reflected on the difficult journey he and his family endured. He thanked the RPF-Inkotanyi who stopped the Genocide, noting that they now live a good life. He urged attendees to continue teaching this history to the younger generation so that Genocide never happens again, saying: “We ask every Rwandan, especially the youth, not to distort our history. Never allow what happened to happen again.”
The President of Ibuka in Gatsibo District, Jean Nepo Sibomana, encouraged religious leaders to teach people kindness, as it will help Rwandans build the country. He urged the youth to love their country, speak the truth about the Genocide, and fight its ideology, saying: “Religious institutions should be at the forefront of healing hearts. Youth, you too have a great responsibility to protect the truth and denounce those who still deny the Genocide.”
In his remarks, the Mayor of Gatsibo District, Richard Gasana, who was also the guest of honor, said: “When we say ‘Remember – Unite – Renew,’ we mean the renewal of Rwandans, the renewal of our country, building the unity of Rwandans, and building friendship.” He called on attendees to stay on that path.
Participants resolved to continue being catalysts for unity and peace, striving to ensure that what happened never happens again in Rwanda.
